Affiliate Marketing Sucks

Something has been stuck in my craw for a while… and I can’t keep quiet about it anymore. Wanna know what’s got me all tensed up like a tightly coiled spring? All these people constantly hitting me up to promote their product launches. They’re so damn arrogant about it. First of all, in almost all cases, I make more money promoting my own products. So what incentive do I have to promote their products? In almost all cases there is none.

They never tell me WIIFM. (What’s in it for ME!) They just expect me to jump on board. But the thing that REALLY frosts my cute little tush (well, according to my wife it’s cute) is how these people expect me to just fall in line and drop everything I’m doing to promote their stuff on THEIR launch schedule. Look, I’ve got my own stuff planned and scheduled according to MY schedule… selling stuff that makes me a helluva lot more money. How incredibly arrogant it is to assume I’m just going to shove my own plans and schedule aside to promote some affiliate product.

And it’s getting ridiculous. There are new product launches almost weekly now. If I agreed to all the deals I get hit up for I’d never have the time to promote my own stuff. And once you do it for one person, all your other “friends” (who are in reality business acquaintances you hardly know) try to use the friend angle to get you in on THEIR launch. “You did it for so-and-so… why won’t you do it for me? Waa… waaa!” Since I’m killing your precious affiliate marketing sacred cow today… let me tell you something that will REALLY get your panties in a bind… Relying on affiliate marketing as a significant part of your customer acquisition or marketing plan is…

Absolutely Bone-Headed Stupid!

And sooner or later you’re going to regret it. Why? Actually, there are several reasons… First of all, 95% of your affiliates will never do ANYTHING! You’re wasting a gawd-awful amount of time, money and resources trying to sign people up as affiliates… and you’re wasting even more valuable resources trying to get them to do something. They’re not gonna do it… and you’re completely delusional to even expect them to do anything.

Which brings me to the most important reason why affiliate marketing sucks…

We are direct response marketers. (Yes, I know you have an exclusively online business. You’re STILL a direct response marketer. You just stupidly choose to restrict your direct response business to only one medium. I’ll NEVER understand that, by the way.) As direct response marketers, the marketing systems we develop are supposed to be predictable and reliable. We should know that investing “X” amount of time, money and energy in a campaign will deliver “Y” results. And we should be able to get almost the exact same results each and every time. Now what, pray tell, is predictable and reliable about using affiliates to sell your products?


One of my friends just lost 90% of his business overnight because his biggest affiliate petered out for one reason or another. Think about it… you’re relying on other people for the success of your business. If you truly understood how few people ever do anything… you would be in absolute horror about your dependence on others. If your business plan depends on your affiliates doing something… you’re in big trouble. I learned something very important recently while going through the process of selling a direct response business.

The systems you have in place that consistently, predictably and reliably bring in customers and sales are what really increase the value of your business to a potential buyer. A big e-mail list of freebie-seeking moochers isn’t very valuable to a buyer. An affiliate program with 3% of them somewhat active isn’t very valuable either. They’re not stable, predictable or reliable systems. But a big active snail mail customer list that you mail offers to once a month and has a great ROI… now that is VERY valuable. In fact, THAT is your most valuable asset and is the FIRST thing a knowledgeable direct response marketer will look at when determining the value of your business.

A direct mail promotion with records of ROI when mailed to various lists… now, THAT is valuable… AND predictable and reliable. Your affiliates… eh. Your affiliates are just gravy. It’s great if they bring in some business but you shouldn’t count on it. And if your affiliate program is a big part of your customer acquisition, then you shouldn’t rest until you get more predictable and reliable campaigns and systems in place. Because you’re one minor little glitch away from being out of business.

Now I’m REALLY going to piss some people off…

The reason you have problems like this is because you’ve been listening to the Internet Marketing gurus. And they’re completely clueless about the history of our business. (Except Ken McCarthy of The System Seminar. He’s a mail order master who has successfully transferred that to the Internet. And one of the very few Internet Marketing gurus who is the REAL deal.)

If you really want to figure out how to most effectively market your products and services… online AND offline… you need to study the old mail order masters. Guys like Gary Halbert, Joseph Cossman, E. Haldeman Julius, the Thomas Hall Direct Mail Guides (Halbert’s mentor), Ted Nicholas, Robert Collier, Melvin Powers, Eugene Schwartz, Dick Benson, and others. The current gaggle of gurus has never even heard of those people, let alone STUDY them. And you’ve been learning from people who have never taken the time to study the true masters.

Hell, I spoke to a guy recently who teaches online marketing and he said, “I think I might try some direct marketing soon.” He’s a TEACHER of this stuff and he doesn’t even realize he’s using direct marketing! So go back and study the mail order masters… not the “guru of the month”. You’ll be much better grounded in the timeless principles of marketing… and you’ll have a much more successful business to show for it. Thanks for letting me rant a little bit today. Ineffective Offline Marketing Strategies

When most business owners go out to market their business, they usually don’t know where to begin. Some business owners have heard that cold calling works; that going door to door works, and that they need to start a telemarketing agency to call each prospect that they receive in attempt to sell them on their products.

But all of this is nonsense.

Cold calling is something that I don’t recommend doing. I’ve been on both sides of the field. When I first started my direct mail business a few years back, I had no idea of how to market via direct mail. I would hope that each campaign was going to bring back an influx of new customers, but instead I went an entire month without making any sales.

Then that’s when I turned to cold calling. I would call up business owners randomly out of the phonebook, and try to sell my services to them. This attempt failed for me also. At that point, I was thinking about just going out and working a normal job. But the thought of that made me cringe, but at that point I had no other options.

The job that I would go on to acquire is this collection agency’s call center. The was a fairly large facility, and I figured I could do since I’m sitting down all day and not doing any physical labor. (yeah, I’m lazy like that).

Yet unfortunately, my days as a collections rep were number. After my first 2 months there, they fired me due to lack of performance. So that completely stopped my cash flow, and I would have to develop a plan for getting a job and bring some income back into my life.

But one quick note: While I was working at the collections agency, I learned and heard some of the rejections, questions, and negatively when we would call out to people. They were either busy, had no money, or simply didn’t want to pay at this point in time. I learned a lot from that job, but the biggest thing that I learned was that for all of this calling and persuading that I had to do, it was all for just $9 an hour.

I don’t know about you, but in today’s economy, $9 an hour is simply not getting it done. With the rising costs of gas, food, electricity, and other expenses, you need to have a steady, predictable income that is going to last you through tough times.

After I got fired from my collections agency job, I turned back to business because so that I can stay in business for the long term, and not to satisfy a boss who could care less about your interests and goals. That is why you want to do whatever it takes to close someone as doing business with you.

Just like how Kobe Bryant is considered the “best closer” in the game of basketball, you need to be the best closer in your business also. Don’t believe in the hype that having your own business brings upon. Measure your success like I do by the number of leads that you get on a daily basis – because your leads do in fact have a worth. It’s just up to you on how you want to capitalize on this lead.

How to Effectively Become a Recognized Leader in the Direct Selling Profession

If your desire is to become a “recognized leader” within the direct selling industry, the first thing that I recommend that you do is find people within the profession who are already recognized leaders and begin to emulate them.

The benefits of observing and emulating existing recognized leaders are as follows:

  • If all goes well, you will adopt the key to success, which is a wealth mentality.
  • You will eliminate the “need” mentality from your framework. I.e. I need to recruit people; I need people to join my business etc…
  • You will learn to let people’s criticism just roll off your back.
  • You will learn the art of posturing.
  • You will learn to say “no.” This is a result of having adopted the wealth mentality and the realization that it is not possible for you to please everyone.
  • You will understand the power of loyalty and begin to uplift and improve the lives of those around you for no other reason than you want to.
  • You will begin (if you have not already) to take care of yourself. Daily improvement of your body through a healthy lifestyle will take a leading role. This lifestyle will be further enhanced by the way you dress and present yourself in public.
  • You will become very confident, outgoing and will no longer suffer from a low self-esteem.
  • You will acquire s strong physical presence and move with poise and purpose.
  • You will begin to talk confidently and control a conversation without any fear of interrupting the other person.
  • You will begin to protect your most valuable resource, which is your time. Only those that deserve it will be given it.

The key to becoming a recognized leader in the direct selling profession is to become valuable to others. The more valuable you are to others, the more people will seek you out.

So, how does one do this?

The answer can be found in well known saying in the direct selling industry, “Leaders are Readers.”

There is not fast way to become a recognized leader, so don’t look for one.

If your desire is to have people seek you out like other recognized leaders do, you must increase your value to these people through education and experience.

Hint: It really does not take a lot to increase your value in the eyes of s prospect, all you need to do is know just a bit more than they do about building a home-based business.

In the end, your success in the direct selling profession comes down to just TWO things:

  1. Becoming a leader to others by increasing your value.
  2. The ability to express your value to prospects through marketing.

There are no short-cuts.

How to Use Color in Your Direct Marketing Campaign

One of the most powerful elements of design when it comes to marketing materials, such as flyers and brochures, is color. Every single person associates certain colors with elements in nature. Some colors are more energizing and in-your-face, while others are soothing and less obtrusive.

A lovely dark forest green has a masculine quality. It’s especially effective if the demographic that you’re targeting is men.


Read is like a “pow” to your senses. You can’t ignore it! It is a powerful color to use for things that you want to emphasize. The eye will always look at the color red first before anything else on the page. It is the color of vitality and energy. Consider using it for headlines or for contact information, wherever you want to create emphasis.

Use color strategically in your direct marketing efforts. They should help improve them and pay off in big dividends. It’s important that the materials are high quality, with saturated color. Make sure to work with a reputable printing company for optimal results.

Is Your Baby Smart? And Why Network Marketing is the Greatest Thing to Happen Thus Far in Your Life!

So I will admit it, I like to work!

Some times I like to work in different locations, places, and cities.

Today, I decided to sit down at Panera (restaurant/coffee place). There are two distinct things that I am grateful for: 1. I know that none of my kids are going to be what the GENERAL population considers “smart” 2. Network Market/Direct Sales is the best thing to EVER happen to me!

Here is how the story starts:

I sit down.

I open my laptop up. Start working.

Next to me is a couple that is getting ready to have their first child.

The topic of money, careers, and child’s intelligence comes up. It sounds like he and his wife have never talked about the subject of money. She starts to quiz her husband how all the “so called rich” people they know made their money. Once he identifies someone with money she asks about their job, then what they got their degree in, and from what college.

My thought as this is going on: Jobs and college couldn’t be any less important to becoming RICH! I think how grateful I am to have made every mistake in the book trying to figure out how to become RICH! I think back to the time I was first exposed to the concept of profits versus wages. How I remember the first time I made thousand dollars in a week SELLING opposed to work a hundred hours at potential jobs to earn the same amount of money. How the “average person” never learns about the power of free enterprise in their life.

The couple: She puts out the question: Is our baby going to be smart? Where did your family go to college, will our baby be able to do that? I don’t want our kid not to be stupid.

My thought: Boy oh Boy, I am a lucky kid. I am the stupid kid. I was the kid that was terrible. I was the kid that got terrible grades. Lucky for me my parents put up with my stuff. I even had a kid who thought that I wasn’t college material! Thank god I figured out how to overcome all these problems. Even today I learned to profit from it with an online information business about learning disabilities.

I think you are getting my point! Network Marketing taught me the lesson of the successful people. How different my life would be if I never were exposed to this “other world” that exists. Where people know that if they are 100 percent responsible for their actions they can achieve ANYTHING they want! Even if I never made a dime from business, the education that we learn is WORTH ALL THE TIME AND EFFORT!

What a scary place the world must seem when someone believe everything in life is up to chance. If something bad happens we cannot control how we react.

Now this might seem harsh, but GOSH I am in such a different place from what the average person thinks! I can’t even conceive the thoughts that I over heard tonight. I have such faith in what is possible that thoughts of limiting beliefs and lowering my goals are ALWAYS met with a fight! I ALWAYS remember to have faith matched with hard core anything can be achieved.

Is there a point: Not sure.

Is there a lesson: Absolutely!

You must recognize how grateful you should be to be in network marketing, to know about personal development, and realize how different your life could be if you never were shown another way!

First let me explain the difference between direct selling and multi-level marketing.

Direct Selling Companies

These are know as “seller-based” because they give more income to the distributor for a retail sale.

The products are usually higher-ticket, one-time sale items. Additionally, there is little or no actual residual income from these direct sales companies.

Multi-Level Companies

These companies typically offer reasonably priced products that people consume and reorder.

A distributor typically earns less money up-front with these consumable products, but the long-term potential of reorders year after year can be substantial.

Now you have to choose a Network Marketing company with a product or service you like – A LOT. The most successful people in Network Marketing are people who LOVE their product and or service.

How will you choose a Network Marketing company? Here is a checklist that will help you.

1. What is the product or service?

You’ll be talking about it extensively, so you need to be proud and excited to tell the story. You’ll also need to be a “product of your product or service,” which means you use it in your daily life and understand it first hand.

2. Does it have integrity?

Check out the company, people and products and or services. Do they do what they say? Without their integrity behind you, you will not be successful.

3. Is the company “Distributor-Driven?”

In other words, does it function for the benefit of the people who distribute its products or services? Distributors are the profit centers of a direct selling or network marketing company. They should be fairly paid.

4. Does it have good management?

As in any business, excellent management can mean the difference between success and failure.If the CEO is not experienced in the industry, make sure he or she is surrounded by people who are! ALWAYS LOOK FOR INTEGRITY! Loyalty – and success – come from people helping people to build prosperous organizations.

5. Does it have a duplicable business system?

Most companies leave this up to the distributors – allowing them the “freedom” to do their own thing. A few companies consider this irresponsible at best and a recipe for failure on average. Look for a company that publishes a video or booklet describing the steps you’ll need to take to be successful. This is a company that recognizes that your success is their success, and they’re doing something to ensure it.

6. Does it have a fair, just and JUICY compensation Plan?

t would be wise for you to find a mentor who can help you determine whether the compensation plan is a good and balanced one.
Here are a few pitfalls to avoid:
- Some plans can take away people that you have brought in.
- Some plans are top-heavy; they reward people who are already earning the most, or who have been in the longest, at the expense of the new people.
- Some companies change their plans often. This is disruptive and usually not in the best interest of distributors.
- Some companies have challenges as they grow. Learning from these challenges is great, but some companies never learn.
- Some companies lead people on with rewards like cruises and prizes. Look for companies that reward with compensation – that you can use as you choose!
- Some companies make wild claims about the big money you can make quickly. Don’t buy it!

Whenever you see a successful business someone once made a courageous decision, so when will you make yours? Even if you do choose a Direct Selling or Multi-Level Marketing company that’s not perfect, make sure you come out of it better, smarter, more able and more capable than when you went in.
